a melon a day

#MELONMEET - LOS ANGELES

This past Saturday the 26th, Sara Cath and I hosted the first ever instagram Melon Meet for digs apparel, a company that seeks to generate awareness towards traumatic brain injury through art and community. Their meet was in New York City, being their main headquarters. There were also meetups in San Antonio, Houston, Sydney, and Dallas to name a few.

The turnout was fantastic, and everyone made such incredible images. It was really inspirational to be surrounded by people eager to create, and seemed to generate a ripple effect towards what we all were doing.

Between two backdrops there was a table full of fun props and things to play with. My favorite are the confetti eggs.

Thanks so much to everyone who came and decided to spend a very hot Saturday playing and creating! I hope to have many more gatherings involving community and creativity, because what else is there?

Also a BIG thank you to digs apparel and Maz McWilliams for creating this movement, and for supplying a chance to make things happen. LOVE!

NY to LONDON, Part i: New York City

It all started when I realized that my dad and I hadn't really seen each other in somewhere around 3 years. The more I contemplated this, reflecting on all the ups and downs I had experienced in that time without us actually connecting, the more I panicked. Awareness of the sneakily short duration of life we are given started staring me in the face, and being busy can only be an excuse for so long. Family is relevant and if possible should be tended to, just like any other aspect of a healthy life. The time had come for a trip together. So. We decided to try for a transatlantic cruise.

The monolithic Queen Mary 2 would disembark from New York City, course the ocean, and arrive in London one week later. I took the opportunity to spend some time in New York before leaving.

My room at the Carlton Arms Hotel. I read the review of this place, which either got 1 or 5 stars, and immediately knew I'd love it. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay in a prime location, check out its availability! Each room is decorated by a different artist (there's even a Banksy room) and each have their own individual charm. Remember the Happiness Hotel in the Great Muppet Caper? No? Okay, anyway, it's a couple steps up from that but it had similarities. Despite that not sounding like a selling point, I loved this spot and would certainly go back.

Here's the beautiful Alyosha. He and I met while I lived in Boulder, though he's a native of Wales. It was so great to get to spend time with this one, after 2 years absence!

I finally had the sincere honor of meeting Maz McWilliams, who co-founded Digs Apparel out of New York. His mission is to create awareness for traumatic brain injury, doing so by way of art. Truly inspirational fellow.

This is his friend Billy Raftery, yet another big hearted human with a cause to work for. This guy has been developing the documentary Angels in Exile , which targets the crisis in Durban and focuses mainly on the lives of street children.

Melonic Mudras No. 1 with DIGS APPAREL

This is Part I of a series I'll be doing for digs apparel (previously known as "digz"), a clothing line for men of the sporty sense, which will be launching in fall/winter of 2014. digs is the driving force behind A Melon A Day, a cause dedicated to generating awareness and recovery towards traumatic brain injury. This started as a labor of love and a very personal project to the creators. To see more, check here. They've asked photographers and artists from around the world to offer their skills to help this message circulate. I find this to be a thing worth supporting! Check hashtag #aMelonADay to see other artists involved.
