Dinner with Kinfolk in Mexico City - L'Esprit De La Mer

A few months ago, I went to Mexico City to experience a global event hosted by Kinfolk Magazine. The theme was L'esprit De La Mer - a finely curated multiple course menu focused on seafood, as well as local cuisine. Kinfolk may look calm on paper but in Mexico City things are a bit spicier.

This is Ana. A very talented photographer in Mexico City. She also did some of the organizing for this event, held at an incredible home in Roma Norte.

Through the kitchen and up these stairs was where the party started.

The good folks from Mezcal Bruxo were kind enough to mix and muddle for us. The drinks even came with a couple How-To lessons.

We were taught some simple techniques in handling mezcal, and also got a demo from chef Diego on how to make salt froth instead of salting the rim of a margarita. The idea here is that the salt should be the second thing to hit your lips, not the first. This allows for the flavor of the mezcal to be savored, before the salt kills your ability to taste.

The first one was passed around and shared by everyone- a rite of passage.

We were put to work so that everyone had a part in creating the nights meal. I really loved this part, since especially as Westerners, we are so used to sitting down and being served without question. This infused the entire experience with so much more joy. Each of us observed, learned, worked, got to know each other, and somehow managed to get a few beers down in between slicing and dicing.

Once the food was ready, chef Diego served us one by one as each course was revealed.

This is Dante. A resident of Mexico City, he's a filmmaker and photographer, having worked on several films. One of them was Frida. I asked how locals thought of the representation and he said it was seen as  a great success. He also is passionate about fresh organic produce, and provided all of the nights greens and herbs from his own garden. "It's not about dinner, it's about intervention of life!" - Dante

As the night went on, the music got louder, the bottles emptied, and the cheer became tangible. An elegant meal transformed quickly into a dance party.

The evening started beautifully on the rooftop of a glorious home with incredible people, and ended just as good with the same great folks- if not a bit blurry.
