NY to LONDON, Part i: New York City

It all started when I realized that my dad and I hadn't really seen each other in somewhere around 3 years. The more I contemplated this, reflecting on all the ups and downs I had experienced in that time without us actually connecting, the more I panicked. Awareness of the sneakily short duration of life we are given started staring me in the face, and being busy can only be an excuse for so long. Family is relevant and if possible should be tended to, just like any other aspect of a healthy life. The time had come for a trip together. So. We decided to try for a transatlantic cruise.

The monolithic Queen Mary 2 would disembark from New York City, course the ocean, and arrive in London one week later. I took the opportunity to spend some time in New York before leaving.

My room at the Carlton Arms Hotel. I read the review of this place, which either got 1 or 5 stars, and immediately knew I'd love it. If you're looking for a cheap place to stay in a prime location, check out its availability! Each room is decorated by a different artist (there's even a Banksy room) and each have their own individual charm. Remember the Happiness Hotel in the Great Muppet Caper? No? Okay, anyway, it's a couple steps up from that but it had similarities. Despite that not sounding like a selling point, I loved this spot and would certainly go back.

Here's the beautiful Alyosha. He and I met while I lived in Boulder, though he's a native of Wales. It was so great to get to spend time with this one, after 2 years absence!

I also got to see this homie, who works for the temporary tattoo company Tattly. If you're in need of any sort of easily removable ink, they're the ones to talk to. Internet, meet Ace Boothby. This guy also kills with a camera.

I finally had the sincere honor of meeting Maz McWilliams, who co-founded Digs Apparel out of New York. His mission is to create awareness for traumatic brain injury, doing so by way of art. Truly inspirational fellow.

This is his friend Billy Raftery, yet another big hearted human with a cause to work for. This guy has been developing the documentary Angels in Exile, which targets the crisis in Durban and focuses mainly on the lives of street children.

And then! On to fantastically technicolor times at the Refinery29 offices! I was stoked to be invited to their first ever instagram meetup, and even MORE stoked that it fell right on the day I would be in New York!
